Rome, the capital of Italy, is one of the world’s most important tourist destinations for its artistic treasures, unique traditions, majesty of its magnificent parks and beauty of its panoramic views. In 2007, it was the 3rd most visited in the European Union. Its historic center is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
As a city more than two and a half thousand years old, Rome is home to historical places including marks of the beginning of western civilization and the ancient Roman Empire and Renaissance period architecture.
Tourists can visit the world’s largest interior of St Peter’s Basilica. The church is described as the greatest of all churches of Christendom.
Rome is considered as one of the world’s most beautiful ancient cities. It contains vast amounts of priceless works of arts, churches, palaces, basilicas, temples, and venues. Its architecture has developed from the classical and imperial roman styles to modern fascist architecture. The most visited places in Rome are the Colosseum, Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, Sistine Chapel, and the Roman Forum. The Colosseum receives four million tourists each year.
Standing 25.9 meters high and 19.8 meters wide, Trevi Fountain is the largest Baroque fountain in Rome.
Public parks account a large area in Rome. Villas and landscaped gardens represent the most notable part of this green space. Villa Borghese, Villa Doria Pamphili, and Villa Ada are the most notable ones. In addition, Rome has natural reserves at Marcigliana and Tenuta di Castelporziano.
Visitors can take a romantic stroll at the Villa Borghese or watch a free puppet show at the Gianicolo Park.
Rome is also home to many museums and galleries. Most visited museums are the Historic Museum of the Liberation of Rome and the Numismatic Museum of the Italian Mint.
